South Korea Plane Crash: Experts Baffled by Fiery Landing

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

The devastating South Korean plane crash, which resulted in 179 fatalities, continues to raise questions about the circumstances leading to the tragedy. While a failed landing gear is suspected, aviation experts are puzzled by the series of events that unfolded.

Aviation consultant Mike Boyd expressed his bewilderment to Fox News, highlighting the Boeing 737-800's robust safety features. "With multiple backup systems, it's highly unusual for a landing to occur at such speed, without flaps or landing gear deployed. There could be other contributing factors," Boyd stated.

Eyewitness accounts paint a disturbing picture, with reports of flames, explosions, and a "flash of light" preceding the crash. One witness recounted the plane's failed initial landing attempt and subsequent circling before the final, fatal descent.

Authorities are investigating a potential link between a bird strike and the landing gear failure. Boyd, however, suggests the damage might have been more extensive. "The plane's high speed upon impact with the concrete barrier suggests a significant issue beyond a simple bird strike. There might have been other contributing problems," he commented.

The Jeju Air flight, originating roughly 190 miles south of Seoul, skidded off the runway at Muan International Airport, colliding with a concrete fence. Only two survivors emerged from the wreckage.

The lack of deployed landing gear and flaps points towards a potential major hydraulic failure. Boyd noted that even in such scenarios, mechanical deployment is an option, raising further questions about the events. He stressed the importance of the cockpit voice recorder and black box in unraveling the mystery. "The plane seemed to be under control after the reported bird strike, but the high-speed landing without deployed gear indicates a severe hydraulic issue," Boyd explained.

Boeing has expressed condolences and pledged support to Jeju Air. The crash is being considered the worst aviation disaster in South Korea's history.
