The remains of the tanker truck driver have been recovered from the scene of the I-95 overpass collapse in Philadelphia. The driver has been identified as 53-year-old Nathaniel Moody. The Medical Examiner determined his cause of death to be blunt force trauma to the head, along with inhalation and thermal injuries. The manner of death has been ruled accidental.
The collapse occurred early Sunday morning after a tanker truck fire beneath the overpass. The incident shut down all lanes of I-95 between the Woodhaven and Aramingo exits. Initially, no injuries or fatalities were reported.
Moody's family is searching for answers regarding the crash. His brother, Issac Moody, described him as a dedicated and hardworking father with over a decade of experience driving tankers. He questioned the circumstances leading to the accident, wondering if another vehicle was involved or if there was an obstacle in the road.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is actively investigating the incident. Their team is collecting data on the truck, the trucking company's operations, and the sequence of events leading up to the collapse. A preliminary report is expected within a few weeks.
According to authorities, the tanker, carrying 8,500 gallons of gasoline, overturned on a northbound off-ramp curve. The resulting gasoline leak ignited, causing a fire that was extinguished by 7:30 a.m. The fire's intense heat compromised the structural integrity of the overpass, necessitating demolition work.
Efforts are underway to reopen the affected section of I-95 as quickly as possible. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has declared a disaster, enabling the state to access federal funds for repairs and reconstruction. The Federal Highway Administration is collaborating with other agencies to expedite the process.
