Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti expressed optimism regarding his Supreme Court case concerning gender identity, following a legal victory in Kentucky that overturns the Biden administration's Title IX revisions nationwide. In a recent interview, Skrmetti emphasized the importance of upholding the original intent of laws. The Kentucky ruling aligns with the Supreme Court's earlier rejection of the Biden administration's attempt to enforce new Title IX regulations that extended protections to transgender students based on gender identity. Skrmetti praised this rejection of what he termed administrative overreach. He now anticipates the Supreme Court's decision in United States v. Skrmetti, a case challenging Tennessee's law prohibiting gender-affirming care for minors. The court will determine if this law violates the equal protection clause by preventing access to puberty blockers and hormone treatments. The ACLU has filed suit against Tennessee on behalf of transgender minors and their families, arguing the law infringes on parental rights. Skrmetti perceives a shift in public opinion on these matters, viewing recent events as a positive sign against attempts to alter laws through non-democratic means.
