String of Attacks on D.C. Businesses: Explosives and Molotov Cocktail Used

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Early Sunday morning, Washington, D.C. was jolted by a series of attacks targeting three businesses. A suspect, or possibly multiple suspects, detonated explosive devices at a Truist Bank ATM and a Nike store, and threw a Molotov cocktail at a Safeway grocery store, all within a 15-minute timeframe. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as the incidents occurred before the businesses opened.

The first incident took place around 4:30 a.m. at a Truist Bank in Northeast D.C. An explosive device detonated near the ATM caused damage to the bank. The suspect then fled the scene in a vehicle. Just minutes later, at approximately 4:36 a.m., another explosion occurred at a Nike store, also in Northeast D.C., causing damage to the storefront. The suspect again escaped in a vehicle.

Surveillance footage captured images of the suspect and their vehicle, described as a gold or champagne-colored Acura TL with Maryland license plates. The Metropolitan Police Department emphasized that the attacks seemed to be directed at the commercial establishments themselves and not the general public.

The Metropolitan Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are actively investigating these incidents. They are seeking the public's assistance in identifying and apprehending the perpetrator(s). A combined reward of $20,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
