Tennis icon Martina Navratilova, winner of 18 Grand Slam singles titles, shared the joyous news on Monday that recent medical evaluations confirm she is now cancer-free. After a comprehensive day of tests at Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the 66-year-old athlete received the all-clear.
Navratilova expressed her gratitude on social media, thanking the medical team involved in her treatment. This positive update comes after a challenging start to the year. In January, she revealed a diagnosis of both throat and breast cancer, prompting a treatment plan set to begin shortly thereafter. This wasn't her first encounter with breast cancer; she had previously undergone a lumpectomy for a noninvasive form of the disease in 2010.
At the time of her diagnosis, Navratilova acknowledged the seriousness of the situation while remaining optimistic about her prospects. By March, she had recovered sufficiently to resume her broadcasting duties with the Tennis Channel during the Miami Open.
The enlarged lymph node in her neck, discovered last November, led to the initial diagnosis of early-stage throat cancer. Navratilova’s remarkable career places her among the greatest tennis players in history, alongside legends like Serena Williams, Chris Evert, Billie Jean King, and Margaret Court. Her record includes an impressive 332 weeks ranked No. 1 globally and a total of 59 major titles across singles, doubles, and mixed doubles competitions, including nine Wimbledon championships.
