The Devil Woman of Michigan: Unraveling a Double Murder Mystery

Created: JANUARY 21, 2025

Nearly a decade after a Michigan man vanished, investigators recount the chilling tale of how they apprehended Kelly Cochran, dubbed the "devil woman of Michigan," for his brutal murder and the subsequent killing of her husband.

Christopher Regan's disappearance in 2014 launched Iron River detectives on a complex investigation that uncovered a disturbing double homicide orchestrated by Cochran. In 2017, she received a life sentence for Regan's murder, followed by a 65-year sentence in 2018 for the murder of her husband, Jason Cochran.

Speaking from prison, Cochran claimed boredom with married life and work drove her actions. Iron River investigators quickly zeroed in on Kelly and Jason Cochran, Regan's coworker and husband respectively, as persons of interest. However, building a solid case took considerable time.

Former Iron River Police Chief Laura Frizzo highlighted Jason Cochran's potential motive stemming from his wife's infidelity. The Cochrans' marriage was strained, with Kelly living a seemingly single life.

A search of the Cochrans' residence revealed blood splatter, a damaged doorframe, and a telling journal entry by Jason, suggesting a crime had taken place. It was later confirmed that Regan, an Air Force veteran, was murdered inside the home.

Neighbors recounted hearing power tools late at night shortly after Regan's disappearance, followed by a neighborhood barbecue hosted by the Cochrans with an abundance of meat, raising suspicions.

Almost two years later, the Cochrans were located in Indiana after Kelly called 911 reporting her husband was unresponsive. An autopsy determined Jason Cochran died from asphyxiation, shifting investigators' focus onto Kelly for both murders. She eventually confessed to injecting her husband with heroin and suffocating him.

Hobart Police Detective Jeremy Ogden employed unique psychological tactics to elicit a confession from Kelly. After observing her frequent visits to a specific tree in a park, he carved the message "CHRIS IS HERE" into it. That evening, Kelly admitted for the first time that Regan had been murdered, initially blaming Jason and claiming he forced her to dismember the body. She also alleged Jason was abusive.

Kelly maintained her claims of Jason's involvement in her interview, stating he tied her up while he killed Regan. However, investigators found inconsistencies in her narrative.

Kelly revealed a supposed pact with her husband: if one cheated, they had to kill the lover or be killed by their spouse. She pleaded not guilty in Regan's case, but the jury swiftly convicted her on all counts.

Regan's ex-girlfriend remembered him as a wonderful individual who embraced life, enjoyed the outdoors, and was committed to self-improvement.
