Tranel Announces Rematch Bid Against Zinke for Montana House Seat

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

Montana Democrat Monica Tranel has launched her campaign for the Democratic nomination, setting up a potential rematch against Republican U.S. Rep. Ryan Zinke in the 2024 election. Tranel narrowly lost to the former Trump administration official in the 2022 race.

Tranel is the first Democrat to declare candidacy for the western Montana House district, a diverse region encompassing both conservative strongholds like the Flathead Valley and more liberal cities such as Missoula and Butte. The environmental attorney from Missoula is echoing her previous campaign message, arguing that corporate influence holds undue sway over Zinke and other Republicans, particularly during a period of escalating consumer costs.

"He prioritizes his corporate donors over Montana," Tranel stated. "Everyday citizens lack representation, and I intend to be their advocate." Zinke, who served as Interior Secretary under President Trump, resigned amidst several ethics investigations. His 2022 victory over Tranel was close, securing 50% of the vote compared to her 46%, with Libertarian John Lamb receiving the remaining 4%.

Zinke's spokesperson, Heather Swift, countered that Tranel's platform remains unchanged since the last election, while Zinke has been actively "delivering for Montana." Swift highlighted Zinke's legislative efforts, including proposals to modify protections for Yellowstone grizzly bears, enhance mental health services for veterans, and preserve access to national parks.

Recent election cycles have witnessed Montana voters replacing numerous Democratic officials with Republicans, as national issues such as immigration, gun control, and abortion have taken center stage in the state's political landscape. Despite this trend, Tranel's strong performance in 2022 demonstrated her competitiveness, and she aims to expand her support among moderate voters willing to consider candidates from both parties in the upcoming election. She emphasized Montana's history of electing pragmatic leaders who prioritize problem-solving and balance extremism.

Zinke became the inaugural representative for Montana’s western House district, newly established following the 2020 census due to the state's population growth. He had been considered a potential challenger to Democratic U.S. Sen. Jon Tester before endorsing Republican businessman Tim Sheehy for the Senate seat. The primary election is scheduled for June 4th.
