A new report reveals a significant drop in police officer deaths in the first six months of 2023. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund documented 52 officer fatalities, a 66% decrease compared to the 153 deaths during the same period in 2022. Interim CEO Bill Alexander expressed cautious optimism about the improvement, while emphasizing the gravity of even a single officer's death.
Firearm-related fatalities saw a 24% reduction, and traffic-related deaths plummeted by 63%. The report highlights the loss of officers ranging from 23 to their mid-70s, with the majority being male (47). COVID-19 related deaths also decreased substantially, from 72 to just 2.

Louisiana recorded the highest number of officer deaths at six, followed by Wisconsin and Pennsylvania with four each. California, Florida, Indiana, New Jersey, and Oklahoma each reported three fatalities. Encouragingly, 26 states and Washington, D.C. have not experienced any officer deaths in 2023 so far.

This mid-year report is preliminary and subject to change as the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund continues to gather data.
