Trump Returns to a Familiar Oval Office, Personalized with Iconic Touches

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Upon his return to the presidency, Donald Trump wasted no time in making the Oval Office his own again. Notable additions include the return of the Diet Coke button, a system implemented during his first term allowing him quick access to his preferred beverage. This detail, reported by the Wall Street Journal, highlights the personalization often seen as presidents adapt the Oval Office to their individual preferences.

The Oval Office, a space of significant historical importance, serves as a backdrop for critical presidential duties, from meetings with world leaders to national addresses. Trump's inauguration day saw him signing executive orders in this very office, further emphasizing its role in the execution of presidential duties. He acknowledged the office's importance, stating its significance in matters of national and international consequence.

Trump's preference for Diet Coke is well documented, stemming partly from his commitment to abstaining from alcohol following the death of his brother, Fred Trump Jr., due to complications related to alcoholism.

The décor of the Oval Office reflects a blend of historical figures and personal touches. Portraits of George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and Thomas Jefferson are prominently displayed. Military flags, removed during the previous administration, have been reinstated. A bust of Winston Churchill, previously removed, has been returned to its former place near the fireplace. A bust of Martin Luther King Jr., present during both administrations, remains. Silver eagle figures are a new addition to the fireplace mantel. A portrait of Andrew Jackson, a figure Trump has expressed admiration for, hangs in the office – this time a piece from the White House collection, unlike the loaned portrait from his first term.

Interestingly, a portrait of Benjamin Franklin, chosen by the previous administration for its representation of science, has been retained by Trump.
