USWNT's Equal Pay Fight Earns ESPY Courage Award, Sparking Social Media Debate

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

ESPN recently announced that the United States Women's National Team (USWNT) will receive the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 2023 ESPYs, recognizing their persistent battle for equal pay. This prestigious award, honoring the legacy of tennis icon Arthur Ashe, is presented annually to individuals in sports who demonstrate remarkable strength in the face of adversity, unwavering courage amidst challenges, and an unwavering commitment to their beliefs, regardless of the consequences.

Last September marked a significant victory for the USWNT with the signing of a new collective bargaining agreement, concluding a protracted dispute with the U.S. Soccer Federation. This landmark agreement established identical compensation structures for appearances and tournament wins, ensuring equitable revenue sharing and distribution of World Cup prize money. As part of the agreement, U.S. Soccer committed to a $24 million payment to the women's team.

While ESPN's announcement was met with celebration in some circles, it also ignited a wave of dissent on social media, with many arguing that former NFL running back Peyton Hillis is more deserving of the honor. Hillis heroically rescued his son and niece from drowning off a Florida beach earlier this year, risking his own life in the process.

Social media platforms buzzed with opinions, with some users questioning the decision to honor the USWNT's fight for equal pay over Hillis's act of selflessness. One user tweeted, "No disrespect, but HOW THE HELL is this not given to Peyton Hillis, who selflessly saved the lives of his son and niece while putting his life at risk and nearly dying?" Another user echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that while equal pay for women is crucial, Hillis's bravery in saving two young children while jeopardizing his own life should be considered the ultimate act of courage.

Other individuals suggested alternative recipients for the award, including Riley Gaines, a prominent advocate for fairness in women's sports. Gaines has actively campaigned to prevent transgender women from competing in women's sports, citing potential physiological advantages.

The Arthur Ashe Courage Award has a rich history, with past recipients including figures like Jim Valvano, whose moving acceptance speech in 1993 became an iconic moment in sports history. Other notable honorees include Vitali Klitschko, Maya Moore, the survivors of the USA Gymnastics sexual abuse scandal, and Caitlyn Jenner.

The USWNT will embark on their quest for a third consecutive World Cup title when the tournament commences on July 20 in Australia and New Zealand, just one week after receiving the Arthur Ashe Courage Award.
