Utah Boarding School Loses License After Teen's Sepsis Death

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

Diamond Ranch Academy, a Utah boarding school for troubled teens, is closing its doors next month after losing its medical treatment licenses following the death of a student from sepsis. The Utah Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) rejected the school's application for renewed licenses, citing allegations of physical neglect against the assistant medical director and observations of staff neglecting clients. A state medical review panel also identified "breaches in the standard of care" at the facility, which charged upwards of $12,000 per month in tuition.

17-year-old Taylor Goodridge tragically passed away in December 2022 from peritonitis and subsequent sepsis, which led to multiple organ failure. For weeks leading up to her death, Goodridge reported feeling unwell and vomiting, but her complaints were allegedly dismissed by Diamond Ranch Academy staff who accused her of feigning illness. Instead of receiving proper medical attention, she was reportedly told to "suck it up," drink water, and take aspirin. On the day she died, staff insisted she shower and go to the school's medical clinic, allegedly denying her access to her phone during her illness.

Goodridge's family attorney, Alan W. Mortensen, emphasized that peritonitis, typically treatable with antibiotics, went undiagnosed and untreated for weeks. He criticized the school for ignoring her symptoms and punishing her for expressing her discomfort. Goodridge's father, Dean Goodridge, expressed a mix of grief and relief, stating that the license revocation will prevent other children from suffering a similar fate. He believes his daughter's death has served a purpose in protecting others.

While the academy will remain open until August 14 to discharge its remaining clients, its future is uncertain. Fox News Digital's attempts to contact Diamond Ranch Academy for comment have gone unanswered.
