WrestleCon Withdraws Rick Steiner's Invitation After Transgender Wrestler Controversy

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

WrestleCon has rescinded its invitation to WWE Hall of Famer Rick Steiner for its upcoming event in Detroit, amidst renewed controversy surrounding allegations of transphobic remarks made towards wrestler Gisele Shaw.

The wrestling convention had initially decided to allow Steiner back after he was accused of using hateful language towards Shaw earlier this year. WrestleCon owner Michael Bochicchio explained the initial decision was based on Steiner's apology and the belief that he had learned from the incident.

However, following discussions with SB Nation’s OutSports blog and the host of the "LGBT In The Ring" podcast, WrestleCon requested a public apology from Steiner. After failing to receive one within 24 hours, the convention revoked Steiner's invitation.

Bochicchio acknowledged the impact of Steiner's words on the LGBTQIA+ community and stated that the initial decision hadn't adequately considered this. He also highlighted the lack of a formal code of conduct at the time of the initial incident.

WrestleCon has since implemented a code of conduct and anti-harassment policy, and is collaborating with other wrestling conventions to adopt similar measures. The organization aims to foster a safe and inclusive environment for all attendees.

Shaw, who came out as transgender in 2022, originally detailed the alleged incident on Twitter in April, describing Steiner's comments as shocking and upsetting.

Steiner, a former WCW champion and tag-team partner with his brother Scott, has not commented publicly on the matter.
