Following the death of an inmate earlier this month, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has initiated the dismissal of 14 prison employees. Robert Brooks, 43, died in hospital on December 10th, a day after an incident at Marcy Correctional Facility. Governor Hochul instructed the state's Department of Corrections commissioner to terminate the staff members involved. Brooks was serving a 12-year sentence for first-degree assault, having been incarcerated since 2017. While an internal review prompted the decision, the specific details surrounding Brooks' death remain undisclosed.

Governor Hochul emphasized her appreciation for the challenging work of correctional officers while stressing zero tolerance for unlawful violence and abuse. Thirteen employees, including officers, sergeants, and a nurse, have been suspended without pay, and one officer has resigned. Corrections Commissioner Daniel Martuscello III echoed the governor's sentiment, stating that the suspensions serve the interests of both the agency and the public. He affirmed the ongoing nature of the investigations and the possibility of further suspensions.

Brooks' family expressed shock and grief, while also appreciating Governor Hochul's prompt response. They questioned how such an event could occur and emphasized that no family should endure a similar loss. Attorney General Letitia James confirmed an independent investigation into the use of force by corrections officers. Video footage of the incident has been secured and will be released publicly after Brooks' family has had the opportunity to view it. James underscored the importance of accountability and transparency in law enforcement.
