Alex Soros' Political Influence Grows as He Leads Open Society Foundations

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Since taking the helm of his father George Soros's Open Society Foundations (OSF), Alex Soros has continued his practice of meeting with prominent Democratic politicians. Shortly after the leadership transition was announced in June, Soros hosted House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Reps. Jerry Nadler, Gregory Meeks, and other New York Democrats at an event. This gathering, documented on social media, appears to be his first with federal lawmakers since assuming control of the influential multibillion-dollar nonprofit.

Soros's social media reveals numerous photos with key Democratic figures in the House and Senate dating back to 2018. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appear frequently, with Soros referring to Schumer as a "good friend" and lauding Pelosi's leadership. He has also shared a recent photo with Vice President Kamala Harris.

Beyond these meetings, Alex Soros has been a frequent visitor to the Biden White House, with at least 17 visits recorded since 2021. White House visitor logs indicate meetings with officials such as Jon Finer, Jordan Finkelstein, and Mariana Adame, though the precise nature of these visits remains unclear. A White House official previously confirmed two meetings with former Chief of Staff Ron Klain, even though Klain wasn't listed in the visitor logs. This illustrates the potential for the logs to mask the actual individuals Soros met with.

While Alex Soros' political contributions are significant, they are dwarfed by his father's. Since 2018, he has contributed over $5 million to federal campaigns, with his largest donation being $2 million to the Senate Majority PAC. He also donated over $700,000 to the Biden Victory Fund in 2020 and has given substantial sums to the Nancy Pelosi Victory Fund, the Democratic National Committee, and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC).

In his twenties, Alex Soros attempted to establish his own philanthropic identity separate from his father by founding the Alexander Soros Foundation. However, this foundation has remained less prominent than OSF. An OSF spokesperson did not comment on Soros's meetings with Democratic lawmakers.
