Canada Bans 324 Assault-Style Firearms, Plans Donation to Ukraine

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Canada has implemented a ban on 324 assault-style firearms, strengthening its gun control measures. The government announced the immediate ban, alongside increased border security investments to combat smuggling and trafficking, and tougher penalties for gun traffickers. Defense Minister Bill Blair stated the intention to donate the banned firearms to Ukraine to support their defense against Russia's invasion, emphasizing that any assistance provided brings Ukraine closer to victory.

Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc declared that the banned firearms can no longer be used within Canada. This action follows a May 2020 ban on 1,500 firearm makes and models, which expanded to over 2,000 last month. LeBlanc stressed that such weapons, designed for battlefields, have no place in Canadian communities and have been used in some of the country's worst atrocities.

This latest restriction builds upon Canada's ongoing efforts to tighten gun control. The government is collaborating with Ukrainian authorities to facilitate the donation of the banned firearms.
