The increasing capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) have sparked discussions about its potential impact on various sectors, including government and intelligence. While some fear AI could eventually supplant human decision-making, Richard Moore, the head of Britain's MI6 intelligence agency, believes otherwise. In a recent public address in Prague, Moore emphasized the enduring importance of human intelligence alongside evolving AI technologies.

Moore acknowledged the transformative potential of AI, noting that it will make information significantly more accessible. However, he countered the notion that AI will render intelligence services obsolete. Instead, he argued that AI will enhance the value of human intelligence by processing vast amounts of open-source information, allowing human agents to focus on acquiring secrets that remain beyond the reach of AI algorithms.

The MI6 chief highlighted the unique strengths of human agents, particularly their ability to influence decisions within governments or terrorist groups. This human element, he argued, remains crucial for gathering critical intelligence that AI cannot replicate. Moore's speech underscored the importance of human spies being strategically placed in the right locations to maximize their effectiveness.

This was Moore's second public speech since assuming leadership of MI6, with his first address also touching upon the topic of AI. In 2021, he expressed concerns about the West's slower adoption of AI compared to rivals who are heavily investing in this technology. He stressed the need for the West to catch up in the AI race and master its ethical and safe utilization.

Beyond AI, Moore's Prague speech addressed Russia's ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He asserted that President Putin is falling short of his military objectives and extended an invitation to Russians dissatisfied with the current regime to collaborate with Western intelligence agencies. He also criticized Iran for supplying drones and other weaponry to Russia, thereby exacerbating the conflict.
