Catholic Bishops Rebuke Democratic Representatives for Distorting Church Teachings on Abortion

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

In a recent declaration, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) strongly criticized 31 Catholic Democratic members of Congress for misrepresenting their faith to justify their pro-abortion stance. The statement, titled "U.S. Bishops' President and Chairmen Rebuke Distortion of Church Teaching in Abortion Statement by Members of Congress," was released on June 28th.

Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, USCCB President, along with Bishops Michael Burbidge and Daniel Flores, co-signed the statement, emphasizing that claiming the termination of innocent human life is compatible with supporting human dignity is both erroneous and illogical. They cited the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which advocates for the protection of human life from conception, asserting that abortion disregards this principle and inflicts immense suffering on women.

The bishops' statement was a direct response to a declaration made by Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) on June 24th, the anniversary of the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Rep. DeLauro claimed to represent a pro-choice Catholic majority and invoked "informed conscience" and sections of the Catechism to defend her position. The USCCB countered, stating that conscience does not permit committing evil or taking innocent lives, and true conscience must be guided by the Word of God, prayer, and the Church's teachings.

While acknowledging the importance of conscience and religious freedom, the bishops underscored that these principles cannot be used to justify abortion. They reiterated the Church's teaching that the unborn are living siblings, a fact supported by both science and reason.

The bishops concluded by urging Congress to collaborate with them in prioritizing genuine support for vulnerable populations, including mothers and families, and working towards the true common good. Fox News Digital contacted Rep. DeLauro's office for a response but did not receive one before publication.
