Chicago Residents Clash with City Council Over Migrant Policies

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Chicago residents voiced strong opposition to Mayor Brandon Johnson and city officials during a city council meeting, criticizing their handling of the migrant crisis and accusing them of prioritizing undocumented immigrants over citizens' needs. Residents raised concerns about constitutional rights, tax increases, and a lack of transparency regarding migrant-related expenditures.

Speaker Zoe Leigh directly addressed the council, accusing the Democratic Party of constitutional violations and contrasting their actions with accusations typically directed at Republicans. Leigh emphasized that Black families in Chicago experience similar challenges under Democratic leadership, including disregarded constitutional rights, concealed fraudulent activities, and unchecked public corruption.

Amidst the ongoing migrant crisis and rising crime rates, Mayor Johnson implemented a 60-day eviction moratorium for migrants housed in city shelters. Leigh questioned Mayor Johnson's commitment to upholding the Constitution, particularly regarding the rights of undocumented immigrants.

The city council meeting served as a platform for Chicagoans to express their frustration, especially concerning the influx of migrants. Several Black residents, wearing "Chicago flips red" shirts, united to speak out against progressive Democratic policies.

Another speaker, Jessica Jackson, also donning a "Chicago flips red" shirt, criticized the city's lack of transparency in managing the migrant situation. Jackson accused officials of deliberately concealing the true cost of supporting migrants and questioned their plans to pass a budget with tax increases. She demanded a thorough financial audit of all migrant-related spending.

O. King, a 26-year-old Chicago native, shared his experience of his neighborhood elementary school being converted into a migrant shelter. Wearing a construction helmet inscribed with "Chicago flips red," King likened himself to "Bob the Builder," symbolically "building a wall" to protect Chicago and America from undocumented immigrants. He expressed his disapproval of allocating funds to migrants while existing residents struggle, viewing it as a disgrace.

King further stated that Donald Trump's election signifies more than just a victory, representing the end of blindly voting for Democrats. With tens of thousands of migrants residing in Chicago, residents have expressed concerns about insufficient resources to support them. Over 20,000 migrants have arrived in the city since August 2022, with thousands currently housed in shelters.

The cost of sheltering migrants, estimated at $574.5 million since August 2022, has angered residents. At a prior city council meeting, residents opposed a proposed $60 million property tax increase intended to address a $1 billion budget deficit. Mayor Brandon Johnson's office has not yet commented on the situation.
