In a remarkable incident, the U.S. Coast Guard intercepted a Chinese migrant navigating the waters off Freeport, Bahamas, on a makeshift paddleboard. The individual was spotted approximately 25 miles offshore by the crew of the Cutter Sea Horse on Tuesday. Images and video footage released by the Coast Guard depict the migrant balancing on what seems to be two paddleboards fastened together, with a small amount of luggage secured on top.

The Coast Guard confirmed the migrant's Chinese nationality and reported their return to the Bahamas. This incident follows shortly after a separate event involving 26 Chinese individuals landing in Coral Gables, Florida, as part of a suspected smuggling operation originating from the Bahamas. Coral Gables Police Chief Hudak Jr. indicated that the group likely arrived by boat, traversing a canal leading to a private marina.

Two individuals believed to be smugglers, one Cuban and one Puerto Rican, were apprehended along with the 26 Chinese migrants – nine women and 17 men. The alleged smugglers were reportedly armed. This surge in Chinese migrants aligns with previous reports indicating a dramatic increase in their numbers over recent years, exceeding an 8,000% rise between fiscal years 2021 and 2024.
