CNN's 'Underground Climate Change' Report Sparks Widespread Ridicule

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

A recent CNN report highlighting a study on "subsurface heat islands" in urban areas has drawn considerable mockery online. The study, conducted in Chicago, suggests that heat generated by buildings and transportation systems can deform the ground beneath cities.

According to Northwestern University assistant professor Alessandro Rotta Loria, the lead author of the study, this phenomenon can cause unwanted settlement, impacting the structural integrity of foundations, walls, and tunnels. While the deformations are currently small, Loria cautions that they could become significant over time.

The CNN report, which framed this as "underground climate change," sparked widespread derision on social media. Prominent figures like Dr. Jordan Peterson and radio producer Eddie Caiazzo joined the chorus of skeptics questioning the report's conclusions. Some commentators suggested the network was grasping at straws to maintain climate alarmism, while others simply found the concept absurd.

This isn't the first time CNN's climate coverage has faced criticism. Previous reports on the environmental impact of pets and the potential effects of climate change on unborn babies have also sparked controversy. Other media outlets have also been criticized for similar reports, including one linking climate change to hate speech and another suggesting it contributes to childhood obesity.
