Carlee Russell's Strange Disappearance: Internet Searches and Missing Time Raise Questions

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

Newly released 911 call audio reveals Carlee Russell assured the dispatcher she would remain on the Interstate until officers arrived. This development adds another layer to the perplexing case of the 25-year-old Alabama woman who vanished after reporting a toddler wandering along a busy highway.

Russell's disappearance on July 13th unfolded after she contacted 911, claiming to have spotted a small child alone on I-459 South near Birmingham. Following the call, she spoke briefly with a family member before the line went silent, though it remained open. Russell reappeared at her parents' home two days later, around 10:45 p.m. on July 15th, and was subsequently hospitalized before being released.

Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis revealed intriguing details about Russell's actions prior to her disappearance. Security footage shows Russell taking a bathrobe, toilet paper, and other items from her workplace, the Woodhouse Spa Birmingham, earlier on July 13th. She then picked up a food order from Taziki's Mediterranean Café and purchased granola bars and Cheez-Its at Target, remaining in the parking lot until shortly before the 911 call. While her purse, Apple Watch, and the restaurant order were found in her vehicle, the snacks from Target were missing.

Perhaps the most puzzling aspect of the case involves Russell's internet search history. Chief Derzis disclosed that Russell had searched for information about Amber Alerts, including their cost and age limits, in the days leading up to her disappearance. Disturbingly, she also searched for ways to steal money from a cash register. Adding to the mystery, Russell searched for the movie "Taken," a film about a kidnapping, just hours before she vanished. The police chief described this particular search as "highly unusual" given the circumstances.

Further investigation revealed a search for a one-way bus ticket from Birmingham to Nashville on the same day as her disappearance. Russell also reportedly used a work computer to research the maximum age for an Amber Alert. Authorities, including the U.S. Secret Service, FBI, and U.S. Marshals, are actively working to piece together Russell's whereabouts during the 49 hours she was missing. Surveillance footage captured Russell walking alone in her neighborhood shortly before she returned home.
