Edison Residents Challenge 'Props' Ordinance Amidst American Flag Rally

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Following a national outcry over a resident being removed from a town council meeting for displaying an American flag, Edison, New Jersey residents are escalating their protests against an ordinance prohibiting items considered "props" during meetings. They maintain their commitment to supporting the American flag and freedom of expression.

Last month, a resident was escorted out of a meeting for waving the flag to protest the new regulation, which restricts items like the U.S. Constitution and other "props" from public comment periods. The incident drew widespread criticism and sparked a debate about free speech and public accountability.

While the town council has since apologized and clarified their stance on flags, the underlying ordinance remains in place, according to two residents who spoke with "Fox & Friends First" on Wednesday. They emphasize the importance of repealing the ordinance and preserving the six-minute public speaking time without restricting the display of symbolic items like the flag and Constitution.

For many, particularly those with family members who are veterans, the American flag carries deep symbolic meaning, extending beyond simply being a piece of material. This sentiment fuels the residents' determination to see the ordinance overturned.

A "flag caravan" and demonstrations are planned to continue putting pressure on the council. Dozens of residents have already rallied, demanding the repeal of the ordinance, which they view as an infringement on free speech rights.

Council President Nishith Patel issued an apology, clarifying that the rules were not intended to ban symbols like the American flag. However, residents argue that the existing ordinance sets a dangerous precedent and needs to be rescinded entirely.

The controversy comes amidst a shifting political landscape in Edison, with Republicans gaining traction in the traditionally blue state. Some residents perceive the ordinance as part of a larger cultural and political clash. They believe a significant political shift is occurring in New Jersey, reflected in the increased support for Republican candidates.
