FBI Leadership Undergoes Transformation as Trump Begins Second Term

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

President Trump's second term has ushered in significant changes at the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), marked by a series of leadership transitions and reassignments. Following the departure of former FBI Director Christopher Wray, acting director Paul Abbate also stepped down, paving the way for new appointments.

Bruce Swartz, the longtime head of the Justice Department’s office of international affairs, and approximately 20 other staffers were reassigned, according to reports from the Associated Press citing an inside source. Brian Driscoll has been named acting FBI director, a position he is expected to hold until Kashyap "Kash" Patel's Senate confirmation as the agency's next director.

These changes come after the FBI faced numerous controversies during the previous administration, prompting President Trump to pledge to address corruption within the agency and the Department of Justice. Former FBI agent and Fox News contributor Nicole Parker commented on Abbate's retirement, suggesting it was a strategic move given his involvement in the Mar-a-Lago raid and January 6th investigations. She believes his departure was a "good idea" given the changing political landscape.

President Trump signed a memorandum emphasizing accountability for senior federal employees, signaling a shift in the agency's culture. Parker noted the contrast between the private sector's approach to accountability and the perceived "untouchable" status of some federal employees. She expressed confidence that this change in approach will lead to greater efficiency and responsibility within the FBI.

Driscoll, a veteran agent who joined the FBI in 2007, brings extensive tactical experience to his new role. He previously served as the special agent in charge of the Newark Field Office, commander of the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team (HRT), and Tactical Section chief of the Critical Incident Response Group (CIRG). Robert Kissane, a top counterterrorism agent in New York, will serve as acting deputy director.

Retired FBI agent Scott Duffey expressed optimism about Driscoll's appointment, highlighting his tactical background and experience. Before joining the FBI, Driscoll was a special agent with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. He holds degrees from Villanova University and Pepperdine University.
