Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) joined fellow Democrats in blocking the "Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act" from advancing in the Senate. This legislation mandates that healthcare professionals provide the same level of care to infants born alive after an attempted abortion as they would to any other newborn at the same gestational age, including immediate hospitalization.
Fetterman justified his vote on X (formerly Twitter), stating his support for Roe v. Wade and a woman's right to choose, calling the bill's potential criminalization of healthcare choices "absurd." The vote fell along party lines, with 52 Republicans voting to proceed and 47 Democrats, including the two independents caucusing with Democrats, voting against it.
The bill specifically states that the mother of a child born alive after an attempted abortion would not face prosecution. It emphasizes that medical practitioners must provide the same standard of care to these infants as they would to any other newborn of the same gestational age.
Pro-life advocates strongly criticized Fetterman's stance. Lila Rose, president of Live Action, accused him of voting against medical care for a struggling infant and accepting the "leftist lie" that killing babies is acceptable. Students for Life of America President Kristan Hawkins linked Fetterman's name with "infanticide." Katie Glenn Daniel, from Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, highlighted the irony of denying life-saving care to a surviving infant while supporting abortion rights.
