The iconic Riviera Country Club, located near Los Angeles, has been selected to host the U.S. Open in 2031. This announcement comes shortly after the 2023 U.S. Open concluded at the nearby Los Angeles Country Club. Riviera, a favorite among PGA Tour professionals and host of the Genesis Invitational, has a rich history with the U.S. Open, having hosted the tournament in 1948 when Ben Hogan secured a record-breaking victory.

This prestigious course, often referred to as "Hogan's Alley," will also host the U.S. Women's Open in 2026 and the golf competition for the 2028 Olympics. The return of the U.S. Open in 2031 marks a significant milestone for Riviera, showcasing its championship-caliber course to a global audience over a six-year span.

Riviera CEO Megan Watanabe, who has championed bringing major championships back to the club, expressed her excitement about the USGA's decision. Watanabe's vision of hosting a "smaller, premium-sized U.S. Open," similar to the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion, has come to fruition. This selection reflects the USGA's willingness to hold major championships at courses that may not possess the vast acreage of traditional venues like Oakmont or Pebble Beach.

Overview of Riviera

Known for its kikuyu grass, the challenging par-4 10th hole, the unique par-3 6th with a bunker in the green, and its historic clubhouse, Riviera offers a distinctive golfing experience. The club has already begun minor course adjustments in preparation for these upcoming prestigious events. With its distinctive features and storied past, Riviera is set to provide a memorable backdrop for the U.S. Open in 2031.

Unlike some exclusive clubs, Riviera has historically embraced Hollywood celebrities, adding to its allure. This upcoming U.S. Open will be the first held at Riviera since Ben Hogan's victory in 1948. The club has hosted two PGA Championships, in 1983 and 1995, and a U.S. Senior Open in 1998. With the U.S. Open in 2031, Riviera solidifies its place as a premier venue for championship golf.
