The nation mourns the loss of Hurricane, a highly decorated Belgian Malinois who served in the Secret Service from 2012 to 2016. This courageous canine, who passed away at the age of 15, is remembered for his exceptional bravery and unwavering loyalty.
Hurricane gained national recognition in 2014 for his heroic actions in subduing an intruder who breached the White House gate during the Obama administration. The intruder, Dominic Adesanya, scaled the fence and landed on the North Lawn, where he was initially confronted by another Secret Service dog, Jordan. Hurricane then sprang into action, wrestling Adesanya to the ground, despite sustaining injuries in the process.
This brave act occurred just yards away from where then-President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama were watching a movie. Hurricane's handler, Marshall Mirarchi, later recounted the incident, emphasizing the dog's resilience despite the physical toll it took.

Throughout his career, Hurricane received numerous accolades for his service, including the Award for Meritorious Service from the Secret Service in 2014, the Secretary's Award for Valor from the Department of Homeland Security in 2015, and the Distinguished Service Medal in 2022. During the Distinguished Service Medal ceremony, Uniformed Division Assistant Chief Michael Buck praised Hurricane for embodying the core values of the Secret Service: Duty, Honor, Loyalty, Justice, and Courage.

Following his retirement in 2016, Hurricane was adopted by Mirarchi. He remained a beloved companion, showcasing a gentle and loving nature that contrasted with his fierce dedication to duty. Mirarchi described Hurricane's unique ability to be both a formidable protector and a kind, caring soul.

Before his passing, Hurricane had the opportunity to revisit the White House and bid farewell to his former colleagues. His legacy of courage and loyalty will continue to inspire, and he will be remembered as a true American hero.
