House GOP Moves to Expunge Trump Impeachments, Citing 'Sham' Process and Biden Allegations

Created: JANUARY 22, 2025

In a move to formally clear former President Donald Trump's name, House Republicans have introduced resolutions to expunge his two impeachments. Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-NY) and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) spearheaded the effort, arguing that the impeachments were unconstitutional and politically motivated attacks. Their resolutions aim to effectively erase the impeachments from the legislative record, as if they never occurred.

Stefanik's resolution targets the January 2021 impeachment related to the Capitol riot, asserting that the evidence presented failed to meet the threshold of high crimes and misdemeanors. She criticized the impeachment process itself, citing concerns about the omission of key information and irregularities in voting procedures. Greene's resolution focuses on the December 2019 impeachment, which stemmed from Trump's request for Ukraine to investigate the Biden family's business dealings. Greene claims new evidence from an FBI document vindicates Trump and exposes alleged corruption by the Bidens.

The resolutions come as Trump remains a prominent figure in the Republican party and is considering a 2024 presidential run. Had Trump been convicted in the Senate trials, he could have been barred from holding federal office. Both impeachments resulted in acquittals.

The 2019 impeachment centered on Trump's interactions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Democrats alleged a quid pro quo, claiming Trump withheld military aid in exchange for investigations into his political rival, Joe Biden. The recently surfaced FBI document, an FD-1023 form, details conversations between a confidential source and a Burisma executive. According to the source, the executive claimed Burisma paid both Joe and Hunter Biden $5 million each to influence policy. This information, Greene argues, invalidates the premise of the first impeachment.
