NBC News correspondent Ken Dilanian characterized Hunter Biden's plea agreement with the Department of Justice concerning unpaid federal income taxes as a "victory," sparking debate. The agreement involves a guilty plea to two counts of willful failure to pay federal income tax, alongside a pretrial diversion agreement for a separate firearm possession charge related to drug use.
Dilanian's assessment, aired on MSNBC, framed the deal as a significant win for the president's son, despite acknowledging the substantial tax bill Hunter Biden reportedly settled last year. The exact amount remains undisclosed in official documents.

Dilanian highlighted the extensive federal investigation into Hunter Biden's business dealings with foreign entities, which ultimately did not result in criminal charges. Delaware U.S. Attorney David C. Weiss revealed that Hunter Biden earned over $1.5 million annually in 2017 and 2018 but failed to pay over $100,000 in taxes each year. The firearm charge stems from his possession of a weapon while being a drug user.

Despite reports of Hunter Biden receiving millions from Ukrainian and Chinese businesses, Dilanian noted that investigators found no criminal activity. He also questioned the meaning of the U.S. Attorney's statement that the investigation is ongoing, given Hunter Biden's guilty plea.

The White House offered a brief statement expressing support for Hunter Biden's recovery. While the Justice Department stated Hunter Biden faces a potential two-year sentence for tax charges and a 10-year sentence for the firearm charge, the plea deal suggests he may avoid incarceration.
