Killer Whales Cause Damage in Recent Boat Attacks Near Spain
Created: JANUARY 20, 2025
Recent video footage captured off the coast of Spain shows a killer whale biting the rudders off a boat in the Strait of Gibraltar. The incident occurred at the beginning of June and was followed by another similar attack in May, where a sailboat sustained significant damage. Local authorities reported that a group of orcas had damaged the boat's rudder and pierced its hull, forcing it to be towed to Barbate for repairs.
In an earlier incident near Morocco, a British couple recounted their harrowing experience when their boat was attacked by a pod of orcas for over an hour. Despite the intense interaction, the crew managed to navigate to safer waters. Experts suggest that these attacks may be linked to a traumatized orca named White Gladis, whose aggressive behavior could be influencing younger whales through imitation.
Marine biologist Alfredo Lopez Fernandez explained that while young whales might be imitating the actions of White Gladis, there is no definitive evidence that they are being taught by older members. The Atlantic Orca Working Group has tracked 18 such interactions in the region since 2020, with scientists exploring potential connections between these incidents and the behavior of injured orcas.
