Miami-Dade County Renames Street After President Trump

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

In a significant political shift, Miami-Dade County, Florida, once a Democratic bastion, has renamed a street in honor of former President Donald Trump. This move comes after Trump's decisive victory in the 2024 election, where he flipped the county by a substantial margin.

District 6 Commissioner Kevin M. Cabrera announced the official renaming of Palm Avenue to "President Donald J. Trump Avenue" on X (formerly Twitter). The Board of County Commissioners for the city of Hialeah voted overwhelmingly in favor of the change, with a 9-1 majority.

While Democratic commissioners hold a majority on the officially nonpartisan board, they did not block the approval. Four Democrats joined five Republican members in supporting the street renaming. One Democrat voted against the measure, citing Trump's past remarks on immigrants. Commissioner Marleine Bastien, while acknowledging Trump's electoral victory, expressed concerns about the impact of his rhetoric on immigrants and citizens.

Commissioner Oliver G. Gilbert III, one of the Democrats who voted in favor, emphasized that the street renaming was one of many issues addressed during the commission meeting and not the most critical. He stressed the importance of focusing on practical challenges faced by residents.

With the county's approval, the city of Hialeah can now display "President Donald J. Trump Avenue" signs on county infrastructure, including under traffic lights along the city-maintained roadway.

Commissioner Cabrera highlighted Miami-Dade County's strong support for Trump during the election, describing the street renaming as a tribute to his leadership. Mayor Esteban "Steve" Bovo, who initially proposed the renaming last year, emphasized the Cuban American community's gratitude towards Trump. Trump won Hialeah with approximately 75% of the vote and Miami-Dade County by over 13%, a Republican first in the county since 1988.
