Putin Threatens Kyiv Government Buildings After Hypersonic Missile Strike

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Following a significant missile and drone assault on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a new threat: government buildings in Kyiv could be the next targets. Putin highlighted Russia's advanced hypersonic missile, the Oreshnik, which he claims is unstoppable by current defense systems. This missile, recently used against a weapons plant in Dnipro, Ukraine, is reportedly capable of reaching not only most of Europe but also the West Coast of the United States.

The Dnipro strike was a retaliatory measure against Ukraine's use of U.S.-supplied ATACMS missiles on a Russian military facility. Putin indicated that further use of these missiles by Ukraine would be met with continued Oreshnik deployments. He stated that the Russian Ministry of Defense is currently identifying potential targets in Ukraine, which could include military sites, industrial facilities, and key decision-making centers in Kyiv.

The Oreshnik, based on the Rubezh IRBM, boasts a range between 310 and 3,100 miles, and can carry either nuclear or conventional warheads. Its hypersonic speed, reaching Mach 11, makes interception extremely challenging. Putin also asserted that Russia's production of advanced missiles surpasses NATO's by a factor of ten, and plans to further increase production.

The recent attack on Ukraine's energy grid involved nearly 200 missiles and drones, impacting cities across the country and leaving over a million homes without power. This is the second major attack on Ukraine's energy system in under two weeks. Putin justified the assault as a response to Ukraine's use of American long-range missiles against Russian territories. This aggressive move raises concerns about Russia's intentions to cripple Ukraine's energy supply before the onset of winter, potentially impacting morale.

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy condemned the attack as a "vile escalation," highlighting the use of Kalibr cruise missiles with cluster munitions against civilian infrastructure. He emphasized the difficulties these munitions pose for rescue and repair efforts, and renewed his call for expedited delivery of promised air defense systems from Western allies.

Retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg

This latest attack coincided with former President Trump’s nomination of Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg for a newly created position of special envoy for the Ukraine conflict, aimed at resolving the ongoing war. Kellogg reportedly presented Trump with a plan to end the conflict, which includes leveraging supplied weapons to Ukraine as a bargaining chip in negotiations with Russia.
