Former NFL quarterback Michael Vick is poised to embark on a new chapter in his football career as the head coach of Norfolk State University's football program. This news comes after Vick confirmed discussions with the university, expressing confidence in his leadership abilities. He stated, "I know how to lead, and I know what it takes."

Prior to this announcement, Vick was also linked to the head coaching vacancy at Sacramento State. While Sacramento State President Luke Wood acknowledged meeting with Vick, the university later clarified that reports of his imminent hiring were "premature."

Vick's football journey began at Virginia Tech, where he garnered All-American honors before being selected as the first overall pick in the 2001 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons. His electrifying style quickly made him a star. However, his career took a significant detour in 2007 when he pleaded guilty to involvement in a dog-fighting ring, resulting in a prison sentence and a two-year absence from the NFL. Upon his release, Vick resumed his playing career with the Philadelphia Eagles, later joining the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers before retiring in 2015.

Vick's transition to coaching began with an internship with the Kansas City Chiefs under Andy Reid in 2017. He subsequently joined FOX Sports as an analyst and briefly served in a coaching role with the Atlanta Legends of the Alliance of American Football. This appointment at Norfolk State marks his first foray into college coaching, presenting an opportunity to rebuild a program coming off a 4-8 season.
