In a surprising turn of events following the dismissal of involuntary manslaughter charges against Alec Baldwin, "Rust" armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed is now facing a new charge of evidence tampering. Prosecutors allege that Gutierrez Reed transferred narcotics to another individual with the intent to obstruct justice in relation to the fatal on-set shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in October 2021.
This new charge comes as a shock to Gutierrez Reed's legal team, who have characterized the move as "retaliatory and vindictive." Her attorney, Jason Bowles, questioned the timing of the charge, highlighting the 20-month investigation and the lack of prior notice or supporting evidence. He also pointed to recent concerns raised by a departing lead investigator about the overall investigation process.

The evidence tampering charge adds to the existing involuntary manslaughter charge Gutierrez Reed already faces in connection with the accidental discharge of the firearm Baldwin was holding. The incident, which occurred on the New Mexico set of the Western film, resulted in Hutchins' death.
The decision to drop the charges against Baldwin stemmed from "new facts" that emerged during the investigation. Special prosecutors Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis stated that further investigation and forensic analysis were necessary, and couldn't be completed before Baldwin's scheduled preliminary hearing. While the case against Baldwin is currently closed, the possibility of future charges remains.

Despite the dismissal of criminal charges, Baldwin is still embroiled in several civil lawsuits related to the shooting. These include suits filed by "Rust" script supervisor Mamie Mitchell and members of Hutchins' family, all represented by attorney Gloria Allred. Allred has affirmed her commitment to holding Baldwin accountable for his actions on set.

Production on "Rust" was ultimately completed in May, with Baldwin reflecting on the challenging journey and calling the film's completion "nothing less than a miracle."
