Nick Saban Reflects on NFL Stint: 'Biggest Mistake' of My Career

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Legendary college football coach Nick Saban, renowned for his six national championships with Alabama and one with LSU, recently opened up about a decision he considers his biggest professional misstep: leaving LSU for the NFL's Miami Dolphins.

In a candid conversation on "The Pivot" podcast with LSU alumnus Ryan Clark, former Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder, and ex-NFL running back Fred Taylor, Saban admitted that departing LSU for the Dolphins was a significant professional error. While he enjoyed his time in Miami, the experience illuminated his preference for coaching at the college level.

Saban explained that he values the opportunity to develop players holistically – personally, academically, and athletically – in college, a facet he found more fulfilling than the professional environment. Although he appreciated the prestige of coaching in the NFL and competing against the best, he ultimately realized his passion lay in the collegiate realm.

The coach recalled a conversation with his agent, Jimmy Sexton, who asked him whether he aspired to be more like legendary college coach Bear Bryant or NFL icon Vince Lombardi. Despite expressing a desire to emulate Bryant, Saban ultimately chose the NFL path, a decision he now regrets.
