Pence Backs Trump's Tariff Strategy on China, Mexico, and Canada

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Former Vice President Mike Pence has expressed support for President-elect Donald Trump's proposed tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada. Pence believes this aggressive approach is necessary to address trade imbalances, intellectual property theft, and fentanyl smuggling. He argues that while these tariffs may present short-term challenges, they will ultimately lead to improved relations with these nations in the long run.

Speaking to the U.S.-based China General Chamber of Commerce, Pence emphasized that the tariff threats are not a bluff. He stated that the U.S. needs to strike a balance in its relationship with China, acknowledging the country as both a rival and economic competitor, but cautioning against it becoming an enemy. Pence expressed hope that these tariffs would encourage China to return to the negotiating table and address trade abuses.

Trump has pledged to implement a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada until they strengthen border control measures. He also plans to impose an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods until China takes action against illegal fentanyl trafficking. These proposed tariffs follow a pattern of similar policies during the Trump administration, which imposed tariffs on billions of dollars worth of goods, effectively raising taxes for American consumers.

Pence acknowledged concerns about the potential negative economic impact of these tariffs but reassured the audience that they are a necessary step to bring China back to negotiations and address unfair trade practices. He expressed confidence in Trump's ability to combine diplomatic efforts with firm economic policies to achieve positive long-term outcomes.
