David Dutch and James Copenhaver, who were critically injured during the July 2024 assassination attempt on then-presidential candidate Donald Trump, will attend his inauguration. The two men were shot during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, when a gunman opened fire. Their attorney, Joseph Feldman, released a statement expressing their gratitude to President Trump and his team for the invitation, emphasizing the president-elect's compassionate treatment of them. Following Trump's election victory, Copenhaver and Dutch met with him. A third victim, Corey Comperatore, a former fire chief, tragically died protecting his family during the attack. Feldman conveyed his clients' condolences to the Comperatore family. He also reaffirmed their unwavering support for President Trump and their anticipation of his upcoming term.

Both Dutch and Copenhaver were shot twice. Trump, who suffered a minor ear injury, has acknowledged his campaign staff's role in his survival, explaining how a last-minute presentation change caused him to turn his head at the crucial moment.

The two survivors have undergone weeks of hospitalization and continue to grapple with the lasting impact of their injuries. They plan to pursue accountability for the incident. Feldman commended their resilience and patriotism in attending the inauguration despite their ongoing recovery. He also expressed gratitude for the president's team's assistance in accommodating their needs during the event.

Questions remain about the gunman's access to the roof of a nearby building, from which he fired shots. Officials have stated that the gunman scaled HVAC equipment to reach his shooting position. Feldman has previously criticized the security failures that allowed the incident to occur. The gunman had also reportedly flown a drone near the rally site earlier in the day, and FBI Director Christopher Wray testified that the gunman had been present at the rally site for approximately 70 minutes that morning.

A House Task Force report highlighted planning, execution, and leadership failures that contributed to the dangerous environment at the rally. The report recommends reevaluating the Secret Service's structure and its protection protocols.
