Recent revelations about former NIAID Director Dr. Anthony Fauci's taxpayer-funded security detail have ignited controversy. Documents secured by "Jesse Watters Primetime" through a Freedom of Information Act request to the U.S. Marshals Service confirm that the marshals assumed responsibility for Fauci's security from the Department of Health & Human Services early in 2023. This news follows Senator Rand Paul's June inquiry to HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra, seeking clarification on Fauci's post-retirement employment and benefits, including any special taxpayer-funded perks.
The disclosed documents also indicate that Fauci's benefits extend to limousine transportation. Senator Paul expressed his astonishment, highlighting the unusual nature of such provisions for a retired official other than a former president. He recounted how HHS initially denied funding the security detail, only for the FOIA request to reveal the U.S. Marshals' involvement. Paul characterized this as governmental deception, questioning the justification for such expenditures for a retired bureaucrat.
Paul further questioned whether Fauci receives government-funded legal representation, noting the substantial increase in Fauci's wealth during the pandemic. He argued that Fauci's financial gains should eliminate the need for taxpayer-funded security. It's noteworthy that Fauci concluded his extensive career as the highest-paid federal employee. The senator's past clashes with Fauci during the latter's tenure at NIAID are well-documented, with disagreements arising over pandemic responses and congressional testimony.
Dr. Hugh Auchincloss, an immunologist and father of Congressman Jake Auchincloss, has since taken over Fauci's role at NIAID in an acting capacity.
