Following a devastating knee injury to Tank Dell, the Houston Texans have bolstered their receiving corps by claiming wide receiver Diontae Johnson off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens. This move comes as the Texans, having already secured the AFC South title, prepare for their playoff run.
Johnson's arrival in Houston follows a challenging period with the Ravens. Acquired mid-season from the Carolina Panthers, his tenure in Baltimore was marked by a one-game suspension for refusing to play against the Philadelphia Eagles and subsequent exclusion from team activities. He recorded only one reception for six yards in his limited appearances with the Ravens.
The former Pro Bowler, who had a standout 2021 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers (107 receptions, 1,161 yards, and eight touchdowns), will be looked upon to contribute significantly to the Texans' offense. He is expected to become a primary target for quarterback C.J. Stroud.
Dell's injury, a dislocated kneecap and torn ACL sustained in the game against the Kansas City Chiefs, necessitates season-ending surgery for the second consecutive year. This unfortunate circumstance created the opportunity for the Texans to acquire Johnson.
The Texans and Ravens are scheduled to face off on Christmas Day, adding another layer of intrigue to this recent roster move.
