Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

Texas authorities have faced a heartbreaking scene on the U.S.-Mexico border, recovering the bodies of four individuals, including a baby, from the Rio Grande since the beginning of July. Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) spokesperson, Lt. Chris Olivarez, expressed the unprecedented nature of this incident, highlighting its impact on border security efforts.

Two bodies were retrieved on July 1st, followed by one each on the 2nd and 3rd. The identities of the deceased remain unknown, as they lacked any identifying documents. The Texas DPS Tactical Marine Unit (TMU), aided by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, responded to a report from U.S. Border Patrol concerning a potential infant drowning on July 1st. Utilizing airboats, they located multiple bodies in the river. A woman and an infant girl were unresponsive, and despite CPR attempts by TMU operators, they were pronounced dead at Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center. Two other individuals found in the river survived and were transferred to Border Patrol custody.

In a separate incident on Monday, two Guatemalan children, aged 8 and 11, were found abandoned near the river in Eagle Pass. They reported being left by a woman who instructed them to cross into the U.S. This case highlights the vulnerability of children in smuggling and trafficking situations. According to Lt. Olivarez, Texas DPS has rescued over 900 children during similar incidents.
