White House Asserts Drone Sightings Primarily Legal and Domestic

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Recent drone sightings across the U.S. have sparked concern, but the White House, in collaboration with the FBI and other agencies, has determined that most of these flights are legal and legitimate. National Security Communications Adviser John Kirby, speaking on Fox News' "Special Report," explained that their assessment of approximately 5,000 reported sightings indicates they largely involve legal commercial, hobbyist, and even law enforcement drone activity.

Kirby emphasized that operating drones in unrestricted airspace is permissible with proper FAA registration. He acknowledged that many sightings likely involve drones, but stressed their legality under current regulations, with thousands of such flights occurring daily.

This assessment aligns with information from Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, who confirmed over a million registered drones in the U.S. and thousands of legal daily flights. An FBI official added that a dedicated tip line established in Newark, NJ, has received thousands of reports since early December. However, upon investigation, fewer than 100 have warranted further scrutiny.

While Kirby affirmed the White House's conclusion of no foreign involvement, he was pressed on this point. He reiterated that their analysis, including collaboration with the Department of Defense, has found no evidence of foreign adversaries or national security threats. He did acknowledge reports of drones near military installations, which are under investigation.

Kirby stressed that the investigation remains active and that all reports are taken seriously. The authorities continue to monitor and assess the situation as new information emerges.
