Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

New York Yankees third baseman Josh Donaldson's season has likely come to an end after an MRI revealed a Grade 3 strain in his right calf. Donaldson confirmed the diagnosis before Monday's game against the Los Angeles Angels, adding that he hasn't been given a timeline for a potential return.

The 37-year-old was officially placed on the 10-day injured list on Sunday, just a day after injuring his calf while running to first base during a game against the Colorado Rockies. This marks the second time this season Donaldson has been sidelined due to a right leg injury. He previously spent time on the IL from April 5th to June 2nd with a strained hamstring.

Donaldson, a three-time All-Star and the 2015 American League MVP with the Toronto Blue Jays, has struggled at the plate this year, hitting just .142 with 15 RBIs. Notably, 10 of his 15 hits have been home runs. The Yankees acquired Donaldson from the Minnesota Twins in March 2022 as part of a trade that also included Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Ben Rortvedt in exchange for Gary Sánchez and Gio Urshela.

He is currently in the final year of a four-year, $92 million contract he originally signed with Minnesota, earning a $21 million salary. The contract also includes a mutual option for 2024 worth $24 million, with a $6 million buyout if the team declines the option.
