A devastating landslide in Rolling Hills Estates, Los Angeles County, has left a dozen homes uninhabitable and continues to pose a threat to several others. As of Tuesday, the ground beneath these homes is still shifting, causing them to slide towards a canyon below, with officials stating there's little to be done but watch the inevitable destruction.
Initially, a water leak was reported at a Peartree Lane residence on Saturday afternoon. Upon arrival, fire crews discovered structural damage and cracks, both inside and outside the home, indicating a much larger problem. This triggered a deeper investigation, which revealed the unfolding landslide.
Some residents reported hearing unsettling cracks beneath their homes as early as Thursday, foreshadowing the disaster. Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn described witnessing the land's rapid movement firsthand, estimating a shift of approximately six feet in a short period. According to reports from FOX LA, eight homes have already been destroyed, with ten more actively moving.
Sixteen residents have been displaced due to the ongoing landslide, and the city is expected to declare a state of emergency. The County Assessor’s office has pledged to reassess the affected properties, potentially lowering or eliminating property taxes for impacted homeowners. Authorities are investigating the cause of the landslide, considering factors like excessive rainfall or underlying geological issues, though a geologist has yet to examine the site.
