Dan Hurley's Heated Exchange with Referee Goes Viral

UConn men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley found himself in the spotlight again on Tuesday night, not just for his team's overtime victory against Butler, extending their winning streak at the XL Center in Hartford to 15, but also for his fiery interaction with a referee. The incident, captured on camera, quickly spread across social media.

With UConn holding a 10-point lead late in the first half, Hurley argued with an official about a no-call on a defensive rebound attempt. When the referee turned away, Hurley was heard on the broadcast saying, "Don't turn your back on me, I'm the best coach in the f---ing sport."

In the postgame press conference, Hurley didn’t deny the comment, instead focusing on his desire for better communication with the officials. "Did I say that?" he responded with a smirk. "Yeah. Look, I may sound like a jerk, but I expect some communication, too."

Hurley further explained that his interactions with officials aren't unusual, but the constant camera focus on him amplifies the situation. "I wish they’d show other coaches more," he stated. "I wish they’d show how other coaches in the Big East lose their composure with officials. I see them being just as demonstrative as I am, especially during timeouts when I’m not even talking to the refs."

He acknowledged his role in the situation, adding, "The camera… I’ve created this. I’m not playing the victim. I just wish it wasn’t on me 90% of the time. Unless they think it boosts ratings and gives more trolls on Twitter clips to say, ‘Look at this monster yelling at the refs again.’"

UConn bounced back from a recent home loss to Creighton with an 80-78 overtime win against Butler, led by Solo Ball's career-high 23 points.
