DeSantis Urges Florida Lawmakers to Act Swiftly on Immigration, Aligning with Trump's Policies

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is pressing Republican state legislators to take immediate action on illegal immigration, advocating for new laws that mirror President Trump's federal initiatives. DeSantis stressed the urgency of the situation during a roundtable discussion, emphasizing the potential political ramifications if lawmakers fail to act during the upcoming special session. He even hinted at calling another special session if necessary, asserting his authority to ensure the implementation of his immigration policies.

DeSantis is pushing for legislation requiring state and local officials to adhere to new White House immigration orders and providing funding for compliance. He also wants penalties for officials who violate Florida's "anti-sanctuary policies." In addition to immigration, the governor has directed lawmakers to address hurricane aid, ballot initiative signature fraud, and rising homeowner association fees.

However, House Speaker Daniel Perez and Senate President Ben Albritton have expressed reservations about the special session, deeming it "irresponsible" to act before Trump's forthcoming announcements on immigration. They criticized DeSantis for offering only "fragmented ideas" without providing concrete legislative details. They maintain that the legislature will determine the timing and content of any legislative action.

President Trump has already initiated a series of executive orders aimed at increasing deportations, including declaring an emergency at the southern border, deploying troops, and terminating the Biden administration's CBP One app. These actions, combined with the Department of Homeland Security's expanded expedited removal powers and the reinstatement of border wall construction and the Remain-in-Mexico policy, have led to a significant decrease in illegal border crossings, according to DHS sources. DeSantis dismissed the legislature's concerns, emphasizing the long-awaited opportunity to address immigration and the need for immediate action.
