Florida Authorities Dismantle Squatter Camp on 'Meth Island'

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Authorities in Florida are taking action against a squatter settlement on an island near Port Orange, known locally as "Meth Island." The island, situated near the Dunlawton Bridge, was found to be home to a collection of makeshift structures, including a four-story treehouse, huts built from salvaged materials, a trampoline, and even a partially constructed pool.

Law enforcement expressed concerns about the safety hazards posed by the encampment, particularly with the approach of hurricane season. The flimsy structures are considered a risk to both the inhabitants and the surrounding community, as debris could be scattered across the Intracoastal Waterway and damage property. The presence of a trampoline and treehouse also raises concerns about attracting children to the potentially dangerous area. Additionally, the construction is believed to be harming the island's mangrove population, which plays a crucial role in protecting against storm surges.

Evidence of drug and alcohol use has been found on the island. Last week, authorities posted "no trespassing" signs, giving the squatters 48 hours to vacate. While no one was present at the time, officials intend to return to the island soon to ensure compliance. Due to weather conditions, the follow-up visit has been delayed. In the meantime, the local public works department has commenced dismantling some of the structures with the goal of restoring the island to its natural state. Multiple local agencies are currently monitoring the islands.
