Allegations of alcohol abuse and creating a climate of fear have surfaced against Pete Hegseth, nominee for Secretary of Defense, originating from an affidavit submitted by his former sister-in-law, Danielle Hegseth. The Senate Armed Services Committee is currently reviewing the document, which claims Hegseth's second wife, Samantha, felt unsafe due to his actions. Hegseth's lawyer, Tim Parlatore, vehemently denies these accusations, characterizing them as politically motivated fabrications from a disgruntled ex-family member with an "ax to grind." Parlatore emphasizes Samantha Hegseth's denial of any abuse, both in legal documents and a recent FBI interview.

While the affidavit details instances where Samantha allegedly hid from Hegseth and recounts his purported heavy drinking, Danielle Hegseth admits to not personally witnessing any physical or sexual abuse. Despite this, she asserts Hegseth is unsuitable for the defense secretary role. Ranking member of the Armed Services Committee, Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI), expressed concerns about the thoroughness of the background check, stating the affidavit validates his apprehension. He believes the alleged behavior described would disqualify any military leader.

Samantha Hegseth, as reported by NBC News, has refuted any claims of physical abuse, declining further comment on her marriage. Vice President JD Vance criticized the report, attributing it to biased media targeting a Republican figure. Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-NV), a committee member, believes the affidavit reinforces existing concerns about Hegseth's conduct and opinions towards women, deeming him entirely unqualified for the position. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) echoed these sentiments, stating the affidavit contains numerous disqualifying details.

Republican committee members remain largely unpersuaded. Sen. Tim Sheehy (R-MT) views the allegations as a last-ditch effort to sabotage Hegseth's nomination, highlighting Samantha Hegseth's denial of the claims.
