Devers Digs In: Red Sox Third Base Standoff Brews with Bregman Arrival

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

A potential infield conflict is brewing in Boston. Newly acquired star Alex Bregman’s arrival has created a logjam at third base, and incumbent Rafael Devers isn’t budging. Bregman, primarily a third baseman throughout his career with the Houston Astros, joined the Red Sox on a lucrative three-year, $120 million contract. Many anticipated this would necessitate a position change for Devers, potentially to first base or designated hitter.

However, Devers has made his stance unequivocally clear. In a recent interview at the Red Sox spring training facility, he stated, “Third base is my position. That’s what I’ve played.” He further emphasized his desire to remain at third and rejected the idea of becoming the designated hitter. This creates an immediate challenge for the Red Sox, who now must navigate a tricky situation between a cornerstone player and their high-profile free agent signing.

Devers confirmed he discussed his preference with manager Alex Cora and chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, the architect of the Bregman deal. He pointedly noted that his long-term position at third base was a key part of the discussions surrounding his own substantial 10-year, $313.5 million contract extension signed before the 2024 season. Devers admitted to being surprised by the Bregman acquisition, particularly given previous assurances from Cora and Breslow about his future at third.

Cora acknowledged Devers' pride and attachment to the position, stating, “He feels like he’s the third baseman…And we’re going to make decisions accordingly. Here, it’s not about Bregman or Devers or Cora. It’s for the Boston Red Sox.” While emphasizing the team's best interests, Cora’s statement underscores the delicate balancing act the Red Sox face. While Devers holds the longer contract and represents the franchise's future, Bregman's defensive metrics at third base surpass Devers', particularly in the recent season. Bregman boasted six defensive runs saved and a defensive WAR of 8.1, compared to Devers' -9 defensive runs saved and a -2.6 defensive WAR, potentially influenced by Devers’ shoulder issues.

The Red Sox have a few options to consider. Bregman has some experience at shortstop and second base, though shortstop is currently occupied by Trevor Story. Second base remains a possibility. However, Devers remains firm: “It’s my decision,’’ he reiterated. “My position is third base.” This firm stance sets the stage for an intriguing spring training as the Red Sox grapple with this unexpected positional puzzle.
