Ibrahim Mrad, leader of the Universal Syriac Union Party and the Lebanese Christian Front, has called upon the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany to deploy forces to Lebanon and assist in dismantling Hezbollah. In a recent interview, Mrad stressed the urgency of this action, warning that any delay could empower Iran and make the task even more challenging. He believes that coordinated international intervention, working alongside the Lebanese army and under the auspices of the United Nations, is crucial to neutralize the Iran-backed terrorist group.
This call to action follows a fragile cease-fire agreement reached between Israel and Hezbollah after weeks of conflict. Despite the agreement, reports indicate that Hezbollah has not ceased its military operations and is likely attempting to rebuild its strength and weaponry. Mrad and the Christian Front express skepticism about the cease-fire's durability and are urging Lebanese parliamentarians to request international forces in anticipation of its potential collapse.
Mrad estimates that a significant portion of the Lebanese population opposes Hezbollah, but the government and army currently lack the capacity to fully dismantle the group. He points to the unsuccessful implementation of past U.N. resolutions aimed at disarming Hezbollah as evidence of the need for more robust international involvement. Specifically, he advocates for the presence of American, British, and German troops within any U.N. force deployed to Lebanon.
Mrad also expressed concern over recent threats by Israel's defense minister to target Lebanon indiscriminately if Hezbollah violates the cease-fire. He cautioned that such an approach would be a strategic error, potentially alienating the Lebanese populace and undermining support for Israel. While acknowledging the seriousness of the situation, Mrad expressed doubt that Israel would actually resort to targeting non-Hezbollah entities.
