A Lawrence Township, Michigan resident received a one-year jail sentence and three years of probation for his involvement in a New Year's Eve shooting that claimed the lives of two men. Christopher Alan Toppenberg entered a guilty plea last month to a charge of discharging a firearm while under the influence, resulting in death. This plea was part of an agreement where two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of felony firearm possession were dismissed. The incident occurred shortly after midnight on January 1st, during a New Year's gathering in a wooded area. Toppenberg fired multiple rounds from an AR-15 rifle towards two men who were igniting fireworks approximately 100 feet away. The victims, Jason McCreary, 40, and David Reed, 35, succumbed to their injuries. Toppenberg has been credited with 167 days of time served.
