Presbyterian Church Challenges Transgender Procedures for Minors

Created: JANUARY 21, 2025

A prominent conservative Presbyterian denomination, the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), has taken a stand against transgender procedures for minors, urging government intervention. During their 50th General Assembly, the PCA voted to petition government officials to "renounce the sin" of promoting these procedures.

This decision follows a significant rise in gender dysphoria diagnoses among young people, which the PCA attributes to societal influences rather than scientific basis. Citing biblical principles and scientific studies, they argue against these interventions, emphasizing the creation of humans as male and female.

The PCA's stance aligns with concerns expressed by Rev. Bryan Chapell, who questions the scientific and scriptural backing for the push towards transgender procedures. Rev. Fred Greco, moderator of the assembly, clarified that the debate centered on the church's role in government affairs, with the petition falling under "cases extraordinary" as defined by the Westminster Confession of Faith. This clause has been invoked previously by the denomination regarding abortion and the right to life.

The petition specifically addresses government promotion of irreversible sex change procedures, particularly concerning the perceived interference with parental rights. A commission, including medical professionals, will draft the official petition to be sent to federal and state authorities.

The PCA's concerns extend to Canada, where legislation criminalizes counseling that doesn't affirm LGBTQ+ identities. While the PCA hasn't formally petitioned the Canadian government, they are seeking a way to address the issue within their polity.

This action contrasts sharply with the liberal Presbyterian Church USA (PCUSA), which has supported transgender procedures for minors. The PCA, formed in 1973 after splitting from the mainline Presbyterian church, now boasts over 375,000 members and over 1,540 churches.
